The following is a sentence I came across.

He wanted to meet a friend from the past.

My Question is : Is this sentence equal to "He wanted to meet a friend who had been his friend from the past" ?

Is "a friend from the past" correct from the point of a native's view?

Yes. It is a commonly used expression.
