I�m interested in the article �a(n)� and �the.� In a grammar book published in Japan, I found #1, below, the other day.
1. The tomato is no more a fruit than a carrot is.
Is this natural English?
How about if it were #2 or #3? Would they be natural English or not?
2. The tomato is no more a fruit than the carrot is.
3. A tomato is no more a fruit than a carrot is. |

Sentence #1 sounds a little awkward. It would be better to stick to either "a" or "the" in both cases, as in your other examples.
Incidentally, the sentence is not true. |
