1. Delaware and Maryland are not a big state.
2. Delaware and Maryland are not big states.
3. Delaware and Maryland is not a big state.
Sentence 1. The subject is plural but the complement is singular.
Sentence 2. The subject is plural and the complement is plural.
Sentence 3. The subject is plural, but the verb is singular.
I can see sentence 3 is incorrect easily, and sentence 2 seems logical.
However, sentence 1 seems okay to me as well if you "a big state" can modify each state. Could you clear up my confusion, hopefully with another similar example? Thank you much! |
