"For children in Jamaica's rural villages, running is as much a part of growing up as baseball is in the United States or soccer in Europe."
In this sentence
1. What's the meaning and part of speech of 'much'?
2. Why 'much' was used instead of 'many' even befor 'a'?
3. Please tell me more examples with 'much a a part of'? |

Much is a determiner here.
It means in this sentence, that, for kids in Jamaica, running is a sport that is as big a part of their lives as baseball is for kids in the USA.
It is used because it is a normal construction among English speakers when they want to compare a couple of things.
For example: Potatoes are as much a staple food in western countries as rice is in Asia.
He's as much a singer as he is a songwiter. |
