Teachers, could you explain the meaning of the expression "stanch to the last"?

Hi,

Stanch means a few things, but in this phrase, it refers to being firm, loyal, and steadfast, not giving up until the very end.

Stanch is also written as "staunch," which is what native speakers would say. However, it's really not a commonly-used word.

Thanks, Suzanne. I read this sentence in a book written by Charles *beep* (Oliver Twist).
