I was 16 when I began work at the whaling station.
On the afternoon, I arrived at the station as I was sorting out my accomodation, I heard a loud noise coming from the bay.

What does "sort out my accommodation" mean? According to a reference book, it means "find suitable accommodation."

But I cannot find it in any dictionary. Is it right? OR is it a fixed phrase?

"Sort out" just means to arrange or fix up. So you might sort out your timetable at the beginning of the school year, or sort out what to take on a trip. Here, it could mean finding accommodation, or it could mean fixing details like payment, or where to put things.
