Dear teachers,
I've overheard a woman on the bus said on the phone "I'm downtown." Should the right one be "I'm in downtown"? Again, I've heard someone said "I'm home" instead of "I'm at home" Is it interchangeable? Which one is considered a standard English?
Thank you.

It is common to say "I'm downtown" or "We went downtown to shop" or "I don't like the stores downtown," to refer to the main section of a city.
It is also common to say both "I'm home" and "I'm at home" when meaning "I am at my house." _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |

Would it be more appropriate and grammatical correct to say "I'm in downtown" instead of "I'm downtown"?

No. If you are downtown and your friend calls you and asks where you are, you might say, "I'm downtown. I'll be home in an hour."
Other uses:
A: "Traffic is bad downtown right now."
B: "It's always bad in downtown L.A."
A: "I'm glad I don't have to go downtown every day."
B: "I'm in the downtown area three or four times a week."
Don't ask me why the difference, but that's how a native would say it. _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |
