We are going to discuss the way of reading works WHEN it is used for real life purposes.
What does it mean?
She did not want to go on learning English until middle school, when a college student studying in English slowly developed her interest in the language.
What relation does a college student have with "middle school"?
A bus pulled up and I asked the driver how far she was going. "Four more lights."
What does "four more lights" mean?

In the States, middle school is generally just a slightly more modern name for junior high school. So what relation does a college student have with middle school? Not much, I would imagine.
I think what is happening here is that some college girl who apparently was an English major slowly got the girl mentioned as the subject interested in English. Beyond that, however, things get a bit murky. It is not clear precisely when this happened. A bit more context would be needed to clarify the time line of events.
For example, "She did want to go on learning English until middle school..." seems to make it sound as if she were studying English as an elementary school student, and her attending middle school is in the future. However, the next part of the sentence "...when a college student studying in English [studying English] slowly developed her interest in the language" seems to create the suggestion that this occurred while she was in middle school. So is she or isn't she? Unfortunately my psychic powers are a bit weak today.

I would assume the driver meant four more traffic lights, or major intersections.
Hope this helps

I suspect the writer made a mistake in inserting "of."
Without it, the sentence means we are going to discuss how we read in real life situations. |
