Dearest Teachers,
Would you please help me with the questions about slangs? Please let me know if I am wrong. Thank you all so much.
1.If the shoe fits,...= if it goes well.
2.She *let it ride*....=she let it happen?
3.I want you to come fall.
4.The joke is *on us*=They are making a joke about us?
5.*Crunch time*=crucial moment?
6.You get my *bill*=Is there a special meaning than the original one?
Thanks again. |

1. The original saying is, "If the shoe fits, wear it." You say that to someone to mean, "If that applies to you, just admit it." Example: Your friend has been mean to her boyfriend, and the boyfriend broke up with her. She says to you, "Was I too hard on him?" You say, "Well, if the shoe fits, wear it." It means, "If you think the way you treated him was wrong, just admit it."
2. The expression comes from roulette. You put your money on red, and the ball lands on red. You win. You leave the winnings on red for the next spin, that is, you let it ride. So whenever you continue doing something, you let it ride.
3. I don't know what this is. Do you have more context?
4. Usually used when we tried to play a trick on someone, but it backfired. Then we say, "The joke is on us."
5. Yes, the moment when something must be done or else.
6. Not sure. What is the context? _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |
