What is "Election Day victory in California"?
Even opponents of same-sex marriage recognized the week’s developments as a potential watershed moment that could subdue the effect of their Election Day victory in California. Voters there narrowly approved Proposition 8, which amended the state’s Constitution to ban same-sex marriage, effectively reversing a decision by the state’s Supreme Court that had legalized it. _________________ Hiromichi |

It just means a victory (a win) on election day. When the voters went to the polls and voted (on election day), more voted for Prop. 8 than against, so the people who were behind Prop. 8 had a victory. _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |

CP, Thank you. So "that could subdue the effect of their Election Day victory "means that "the week’s developments" were more than the election victory. Am I right in this understanding? _________________ Hiromichi |

Actually, CP didn't have all the information. I put your quote into Google, and found the article at http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/08/us/08vermont.html?hp
Recently, after the Yes on Proposition 8 victory against gay marriage, other states have had other action. First, the Supreme Court of the state of Iowa ruled on April 3 that it was illegal to prevent gay couples from getting married. Then on Tuesday, the Vermont legislature, which had passed a bill allowing gay marriage, only to see it vetoed by the governor, overrode the veto. That means the legislature had enough votes to make it the law without the governor's approval.
The person who wrote the article was pointing out that these victories for the equal marriage for all group show that the issue didn't end with the Yes on Prop 8 vote in California.
The polls on gay marriage have shown a slow steady rise in the number of people in favor of those equal rights. In the vote in California, the youngest group of voters had the largest number of votes against prohibiting gay marriage, while the oldest group of voters had the largest number of votes in favor. The demographics are such that in a couple years time, the numbers in favor and opposed could switch. |

Lorikeet, Thank you. At last I found that my question arised from my misunderstanding of a phrase"Proposition 8, which amended the state’s Constitution to ban same-sex marriage." I misread it like this: Proposition 8, which amended the state's Constitution banning same-sex marriage. _________________ Hiromichi |
