What gave you the ____ of using a male actor for the part?
A. idea B. thought

Is there any difference of the two words?

Thanks

Using idea would be much more common here. Whatever difference there may be between them in this particular sentence is not substantial enough to worry about. Using thought here just sounds odd to me, but more due to customary patterns of usage rather than any difference in meaning. I certainly wouldn't say it's grammatically wrong, however.

You would also hear people say this:

What made you think of using a male actor for the part?

Hope this helps.

Greg
