Dear teachers:
I don't understand what's the different between even if and even though.
And can I use "even though" replace with "despite" .
EX: Mrs. Bishop worked even though she was suffering from the flu.
Can I change "even though" into "despite" in this sentence.
Best wishes,
Emma : ) |

This question is a bit complicated, but I will keep it simple for now.
Of course the word "if" usually carries an element of condiiton or uncertainty.
Even if it rains tomorrow, I will go. (we don't know whether it will rain tomorrow)
Even though it will rain tomorrow, I will go. (we know it will rain tomorrow)
So you can see that "even if" is used when there is some uncertainty.(whether it will rain or not)
And with "even though" there isn't any uncertainty. (it will rain)
And can I use "even though" replace with "despite" .
EX: Mrs. Bishop worked even though she was suffering from the flu.

You cannot just change those words, because the grammar is different.
Mrs. Bishop worked despite the fact she was suffering from the flu.
Feel free to ask further questions.
