If a relationship is stormy, the temptation is to insist to yourself and to others that it is not you that needs to change but the other person. Now it may well be true that the other person should change, but since you can't change other people, it is not worth trying.

In the final sentenc, is it referring to "changing other people" ? Or is it used as a prepatory which functions trying?

Yes. It's so difficult to change other people that it's a waste of time to try.

I have no earthly idea what that means.
