You can point your finger at or to something...we do use both prepositions here. However, if the tip of your finger is actually touching the thing in question, I feel we have a slightly greater tendency to use to, at least in my opinion. It seems that the question is talking about people who actually touch the page with their fingers as they read, moving the tips of their fingers along the sentence as their eyes follow. To seems better to me here.
Having said that, however, the original sentence is a bit awkward. How about It's not a good habit to let your eyes follow your fingertips as you read. Of course, I get that they want you to choose where, but the sentence is clumsily constructed. Which makes no sense because you're not reading the place; the word place refers to the place where you are reading.
Hope this makes sense.
