So on receiving the news of Ivan Ilych's death the first thought of each of the gentelmen in that private room was "of" the changes and promtions it might occation among themselves or their acquaintances.
why does this sentence use "of"?

Hi Katey,
Welcome to the Help Center!
The word of is used here because the changes and promotions are what the gentlemen thought of. Be aware that the expression to think of something can be used in several ways. One of those ways is to think about or to consider something. That's the way it is being used here. The gentlemen thought about or considered the changes and promotions that might occur.
You could use about here and get the same meaning, but of sounds much better.
