I would like to know why direct and indirect speech is important for a translator to know?

Do you mean an interpreter or a translator?

A translator would have to retain the feel of the original text, and indirect speech must come up often....

It would be critical for an interpreter if he/she started every sentence with "The CEO said ...... and then the accountant said....." Smile
