I thought �those,� in the last sentence in the passage below, refers to �the villages.� Is it a possible interpretation that �those� refers to "the girls� or "the girls of the villages nearby," though?
Against the traditions, Samia has continued her education past the eighth grade. No other girl in the village had done this before. She has become famous among the girls of her village and those nearby. |

I would interpret it to refer to girls of nearby villages. Let me make sure I've got this straight: You say you thought those referred to villages, but now you're wondering if it could refer to the girls of other villages. Question: What's the difference? Can you be famous with a village and not be famous with people in that village? Think about it.
I think you have precisely the right idea, but it seems to me you're starting to overthink this just a little.
Now, to interpret those as referring just to girls but not girls in other villages would be quite strange. It would be a little bit like saying:
She has become famous among the girls of her village and other girls who happen to be standing around.
Why would you mention girls in the village, and then mention other girls who happen to be nearby? That makes no sense.
