The word human can be used as an adjective or a noun. As an adjective, it simply means related to or concerning people: human civilization; the human body.
You can refer to people as humans (n) or human beings with no difference in meaning. If you have been unfortunate enough to have some English teacher try and differentiate these two, you have my deepest sympathy. They are synonyms, are routinely used interchangeably, and I am hard-pressed to think of one single instance where it would be correct to say one but incorrect to say the other.
Now, there are instances where we might normally prefer one over the other, but that doesn't make it wrong to say the other. For example:
I am a ___________.
Most Americans would probably fill in the blank with human being; but that doesn't mean I am a human is wrong.
