He was through with sports, not because he had to but because he wanted it that way.
What does it refer to? If it refers to sports, should I use "them"instead?
Can you paraphrase it?
---When do you think we can meet again?
---Well, anytime you feel like ______.
A. it B. that
What is the difference between the two answers since both can be used to refer to a thing mentioned before?
Thanks |

It just refers to the situation itself. That's the way he wanted the situation to be.
"He was going to quit sports, not because he had to quit for some reason but simply because he wanted to quit. No more sports: that's the way he wanted things to be."

"Well, anytime you feel like it" is correct. Yes, that can be used to refer to a thing mentioned earlier. However, in this situation, I think that sounds odd because what would that be referring back to, exactly? I assume you think that would refer back to the feeling of wanting to meet. That's the only thing that makes sense here. Just one small problem: that feeling isn't actually mentioned. The first speaker is only asking about the future possibility of meeting: not the same thing. Consider the following:
--I really feel like meeting tomorrow.
--Why do you feel like that?
Now the feeling of wanting to meet is expressed, and that refers back to it. In "Well, anytime you feel like it", the word it refers to the action of meeting. It's equivalent to saying "Well, anytime you feel like meeting."
I know this is slippery...I hope this makes at least some sense.
