Is the sentence "Compared to the other books, this book is passably interesting, but only by a little" a grammtical sentence?
Does the adverb "passably" have the same meaning as "tolerably"? |

Passably means well enough to be accepted. This is not really a compliment. It means it barely makes the grade.
Tolerably means able to be tolerated, or fairly good.
So, they are similar, but not synonymous.
The sentence you quote is grammatical. |
