Please help me with the following questions.

1. We may have __________ vacation in the coming summer.
(A) a two-month (B) a two months (C) a two months (D) a two months

The answer is (A), but how about (D)?

2. The difference is one of degree, not of ___________.
(A) kind (B) a kind (C) kinds (D) the kind

The answer is (A), but what's wrong with the other choices? Besides, what does "one" mean in this sentence? Would anyone mind paraphrasing this sentence?

Thanks a lot for your kind help.

1. D is not right, but you could say We may have two months' vacation in the coming summer. That means, we may have a vacation of two months' duration.

2. The difference is one of degree, not of ___________.

(A) kind is right: the difference is not a difference of kind (type), but of degree.
(B) a kind is not right, just because no one would say it this way. It is a difference of kind, not a difference of a kind.
(C) kinds is not right, because it is a difference of type or of kind.
(D) the kind is not right, similar to B.
What "one" means in this sentence is "difference." It saves the person from repeating the word "difference."
Otherwise, we might have:
The difference is a difference of degree, not a difference of kind.
Paraphrased: The difference between X and Y is only a difference in the extent or amount of something, not in the kind of something.
Example: Joe and his brother John both have a cold, but Joe is much sicker than John. They both have the same malady, so the difference is one of degree, not of kind.
Mary and her sister Maud are also ill. Mary has the mumps and Maud has measles. The difference is one of kind, not of degree.
