Hi Greg

If not too trouble, please help me verify whether I'm wrong or not in assuming that'college' is served as a kind of 'adverbial function' to modify 'educated'?

Just ou of curiosity, I find that English, what fun, is tricky, because of the fact that even I consulted an advanced learner's dictionary for the word 'college', and there's no word class for 'college' which was an 'adverb'. Confused

I know it's impossible for a book to attend to each and every aspect of descriptions of a matter, and that's why I ask for your help. Again, many thanks, Greg. Wink

Sincerely
rice

Hi Rice,

Nope, college is not an adverb here. I can't imagine a situation where it could be one, either. I'd say it's just a plain old noun, same as always, used in conjunction with the past participle of the verb educate.

Calling someone a college-educated person (a person educated at a college) is a bit like saying...

...home-made bread (made at home)
...a war-torn country (torn by war)
...a smoke-filled room (filled with/by smoke), etc.

These are examples of nouns combined with past participles to form adjectives or adjective phrases. Maybe someone else can do a better job of explaining this than I seem to be doing here.

Hope this makes sense.

Greg

Hi

Thank you! Greg.

I gather that I've grasped your points.

Here in the following is my understanding of that.

1. Both those two past participles 'born' and 'raised' follow 'was' to form the passive forms.

2. But as for the expression 'I was college educated', 'college educated' is an adjective(adjectival phrase) served as a complement to refer to subject ' I '.

If I'm wrong again there Embarassed , please correct me,Greg Wink .

Sincerely
rice
