Do you think �the 12 km journey� (from the passage below) is just a one-way distance to school or it is a round-trip distance to and from school? Which way do English speakers read? I have no idea which.
Eighteen-year-old Samia Sadik is a ninth-grader at the SabeanSecondary School in the eastern Ethiopia town of Dire Dawa. Everyday she and two other students from the village of Harla, both of whom are male, make the 12 km journey to attend highschool in Dire Dawa. |

It's ambiguous the way it's written: you could reasonably interpret it either way. A careful writer would have phrased it in a way that left nothing to doubt.
