The 21-year-old fellow rushed ahead after rising from the blocks and never forgot his position to come home a meter clear of the field.
What does "a meter clear of the field" mean?
Everyone knew it was the most famous of schools. You had to be entered at birth, if not before.
What does this sentence mean?
This could only be his delightful way of telling me that the whole boarding school idea was to be dropped.
What does this sentence mean?
Thanks |

If it is meant literally (and who's to say?) then it means to win the race a meter ahead of everyone else.

It means that it was such a prestigious boarding school that entry was largely based on the wealth and social position of the family of the applicant. That is established at birth, if not before. (In most cases, before.)

The person referred to has said or done something that the speaker understands to mean that he should forget about going to boarding school.
