Doesn't "explain" take the direct object? When is it okay to say "explain about"?
Is the following correct?:
"Explain about the meaning of abstract words ...." |
We might use the construction explain about something or somebody when there is something about the situation that may require some background information or a somewhat lengthy or involved story. For example:
Let me explain about last night, sweetheart. I spilled some wine on my shirt at the party, and uh, then Roxanne was kind enough to offer to take me to her house and wash it for me, and, uhm...
Let me explain about my brother Kevin. You see, he was diagnosed with autism at the age of four, which is why he never makes eye contact with people even when they are speaking directly to him.
I wouldn't use explain about in your sentence, though. In my opinion it reads much better without it.
Hope this helps.
