1.What does 'sit it out' mean?
2.What does 'prepare to sit it out' mean?

They are going to go inside and wait until the storm passes. They will just stay inside and keep themselves occupied in whatever way they can, and they won't venture out again until the storm is over. They're going to sit it out.
To prepare to sit it out means to prepare to do what I just said. Maybe just get themselves mentally ready to have to stay inside for a while. Make sure they've got a supply of food and water. Maybe some candles. Maybe a deck of cards, etc.
