Working on marriage is very popular in Japan now. Some people need action to marry.

Yes, it seems that people are having to make a greater effort to find a suitable marriage partner in these times of increased career options and economic independence.

I heard about that trend in Japan as well but I think it is a global thing. It is only the the japanese are more inventive and quicker in coming up with good problem solutions.
I heard also that existing marriages are endangered by the "macho" behaviour of japanese men. Is that true? The report I saw showed a club of men who trained each other in better understanding so that they would get along better with their wives. They were shown how to help in the kitchen and in the house and how to make conversation with their partners that interests and delightens both of them. The men got a certificate in the end. I found that quite odd in the first place but it is nice that they would make the effort and try to save their marriages and not to risk a ten or twenty year long marriage and get divorced due to all the ignorance.
Yes, I think, that the true work begins after the marriage. It is really a commitment, although it is quite easy to get divorced nowadays. But I don't want to judge anyone whose relationship did not work out the way they hoped and wished.

Sorry, who can explain to me what is "working on marriage"? I never heard of it, what is the meaning of it?

Given the context, I think it means that a person must put in effort to meet marriage-minded people (persons of the opposite gender who are also focused on finding a good spouse), and also you must put in effort to prepare yourself for marriage. People who just want to date and have fun are different from people who want to get married. When other people look at you, do they say "hey, he would make a great husband" or "hey, she would make a great wife"?
