On the night of November 4 many people went to Grant Park to listen to Obama`s victory speech. He is the first black man to be elected President of the US.



Is the`is the first�okay? Or must it be `was the first�?

As long as he's alive you can say he is the first ...

After he dies you can use the past tense. He was the first...
