What does it mean by "commercial endorsements" as in "His family has now gone to Japan where they hope to make money from commercial endorsements to help Michael pay for graduate school."?

When a celebrity allows his / her name or image to be connected with a service or product, in exchange for money, that is a commercial endorsement.
