Hi, please help me with the following question:
A collective but distinctively Malay cultural pattern has emerged out of many influences, with artistic expressions in literature, music, dance, and art forms.
In this sentence, can I substitute "distinctive" for "distinctively"? In that case, is there any difference?
Thanks. |

No, you cannot change distinctively to distinctive without changing the meaning.
The writer means precisely what he said, that the cultural pattern that has emerged is distinctively Malay. In other words, the writer is emphasizing the fact that it is easily identifiable as being Malay in nature; nobody would mistake this cultural pattern as being of any ethnicity other than Malay.
If you said "A collective and distinctive Malay cultural pattern has emerged," you're just saying the Malay cultural pattern in question is distinctive in and of itself; it is distinctive for various reasons (that is, other than the fact that it is Malay).
Hope this makes sense.
