A: You know if you sold yours outright, you could buy a smaller economy model brand new.
B: I know, but we thought we might trade both ours and buy a hybrid instead. |
In the quote, what can the word 'trade' suggest to you, 'exchange' or 'sell' or anything else?
Could you tell me which word the word 'trade' in the quote can be replaced with?
Thanks. |

In the U.S., it is common for people to trade in their old cars when buying new cars. This means that your car dealer takes your old car and gives you credit for it against the price of the new car, then sells your old car to someone else for a higher price. We call the old car the trade-in car.
This is different from selling one's car to someone else, then taking the money to use for something else, maybe buying a new car.
In your quotation, A is advocating selling one old car to someone, but B is saying he is thinking of trading in both old cars to buy a new hybrid vehicle. _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |
