Hello,

What's the difference between a priest and a monk?

Can we have "a buddhist priest"?

This is a really confusing area.

These days 'priest' seems to carry the image of Western/Christian religions and 'monk' seems to be associated with Eastern/Buddhist religions.

So this could be a natural converstation:

"Mummy, what's a 'monk'"?

"It's a Buddhist priest, darling."


However, you can also have Christian monks who differ from Christian priests in that the monks live and work away from the rest of society. This is also the image us Westerners have of Buddhist monks. IE someone who sits quietly and meditates alone near a waterfall off on some mountain somewhere
