Dear teachers!!

Any book of which we say to ourselves, when we have done with it, "That is a good book," we find to be so by virtue of the writer's personality which we have been in contact with: we say so, possibly, because we find that our own self has been affected, even though for a while.

What do you mean by "for a while" in the last part?

(1) for a short while
(2) for a long while

I think that the phrase "even though" is written, so that means (2). But I cannot think more.

Thank you so much in advance.

The writer is just trying to emphasize that a good book affects us (at least) for the period of time during which we are reading the book. The type of "affecting" the writer seems to be talking about is our experience of being in contact with the writer's personality; that occurs during the period of time we are reading the book, however long or short that may be.

True, some books can "affect" us in certain ways for the rest of our lives; but that doesn't appear to be what the writer is wanting to emphasize.
