Hello, teachers!!
A woman can forgive a man for the harm he does her, but she can never forgive him for the sacrifices he makes on her account.
Somerset Maugham
----->
I know the word "forgive," but I don't understand the sentence above.
"she can never forgive him for the sacrifices he makes on her account" means "she will do something good for him because she was impressed with his deed."???
thank you in advance. |

It means she will not forgive him for the important things he gives up on her behalf, because he considers her to me more important.
For example, he may give up a promotion because it would mean he would be away from her. |
