I need your help here:

1. They are protecting their heads with a hardhat.
2. They are protecting their head with a hardhat.
3. They are protecting their heads with hardhats.


I'm not clear about whether I use head or heads and hardhat or hardhats.
I hope you guys can help me.

They are protecting their heads with hardhats, sounds right to me, because all the nouns are plural.
