"Freed scores of other nations" means it allowed many other nations to be free from something. What the passage is saying is that as long as the two superpowers of the US and the USSR were locked in a perpetual cold war, many other nations had to live under the perpetual threat of World War III. This is the "gridlock of East-West confrontation" the passage mentions. With the demise of the USSR, that cold war threat was essentially removed. Nations all over the world could breathe a little easier. "Scores of other nations" no longer had to worry that escalating tensions between American and Soviet leaders might erupt in a flurry of button pushing that would annihilate the human race.
Hope this is clear.
Greg
P.S. The passage needs to have the article the placed before the words "Soviet system." |

| Also, score is a word that means '20', similar to how dozen means '12'. It's not really used much in that sense, but people sometimes say 'scores' to mean 'many'. |
