They would not only have to negotiate specific conditions,
but ensure the safety of the product is expected to
take up some time as well.

Is this sentence correct?

Thanks for your help!

Can you tell me what the writer is trying to convey when he writes

'ensure the safety of the product is expected to
take up some time as well. '

It sounds like you're talking about things taking a long time, right?

...but *activity* is expected to take up some time as well

The activity is going to take a lot of time. What are people going to be doing? They will be ensuring the safety of the product. So ensuring the safety of the product is expected to take up some time.

When we use an -ing form like a noun it's called a gerund.

Hi B7lake,

If I'm interpreting it correctly, you might say:

They would not only have to negotiate specific conditions, but they also have to ensure that adequate time is spent on discussing product safety.

To shorten it a little bit:

Not only do they have to negotiate specific conditions, but they also have to include product safety in their discussions.

Product safety should be included when they negotiate for specific conditions.
