Does a word "captivate" captivate only people not things like golf? Is a usage like below allowed?
Cink won that playoff by six shots when Watson’s age-defying swing finally came undone, ending the story that captivated golf for four days. Watson had at least a share of the lead each day, grinning his way through loving receptions from the gallery each time he walked up the 18th fairway. _________________ Hiromichi |

Yes, you are correct - you cannot captivate an inanimate object.
What the writer means, I guess, is that golf fans, or, at least, people interested in golf, were captivated.
This kind of sloppy English is all too common in today's media. |
