She really takes after her mother.
1.Sometimes I get them mixed up.
2.Sometimes they get me mixed up.
3.Sometimes they mix me up.
4.Sometimes I mix them up.
5.Sometimes I mix her up with her mother. |
I am so confused about the usage of the word 'mix up' that I made up
the above examples so that you can tell me which one is correct.
Please let me know which one is correct.
Thanks. |

If you mix things up, you take different things and put them all together, like coloured rocks or a deck cards for example, and then you move them around until they're disordered and hard to separate. So if you take out a random pebble or a card, you don't know what you're going to get.
So if you mix people up, it's like their names or identities have moved around in your head. Is that her, or her mother? You can get them mixed up (this is what we usually say), but you can also mix them up, or mix a person up with her mother.
You can also say that you're mixed up - it means confused, like all your knowledge and ideas have been mixed around in your head, like somebody messing up your room. So if someone confuses you, you could say they get you mixed up (cause you to be confused) or that they just mix you up.
2 and 3 could also mean they get confused, and mistake you for someone else, but you'd normally say 'they get me mixed up with... (some person)' |

So does that mean the first option is the correct one? _________________ Centennial College Rocks! |

Oh sorry, I should have made that clearer
I'd say 1 and 4 are the most common ways to say what you want to say, and 5 is fine too. |
