I don't get the part "a wide shelf of rock" here.

The place he chose was a wide shelf of rock above the hut. I sat down at the back of it. Lambis lay full-length near the edge and watched the rocks below.

What is it?

It's a narrow horizontal surface projecting from a cliff, or wall of rock.

It's a bit like a shelf in your kitchen or cupboard, but naturally formed.
