Dear teachers

I don't understand the sentence below.

"People are biased in the direction of hardiness when thinking about their best."

Does it mean that people are in favor of hardiness when they are trying their best ?

I need your help.

It's not completely clear what it means.
However, if you are biased towards something it means you tend to prefer it, or to show favour in some way.
So, in your example, .. people favour hardiness (the capability of enduring difficult conditions) when they think about their best. It is not clearly stated whose best they are talking about.
