Could anyone kindly tell me what the follwing joke is all about? I can't understand what NTRL BTY stands for.

I got stuck in a traffic jam while commuting into Los Angeles one day. The woman in the SUV in front of me took full advantage of the slowdown. She whipped out her eyebrow pencil, lip gloss and a mirror, applying the finishing touches on her face in the ten minutes it took us to creep through the Cahuenga Pass. Finally, the traffic broke up and as she zoomed away, I caught a glimpse of her vehicle's license plate: NTRL BTY.

Sometimes people get licence plates with names or phrases on them but they have to work around the limitations, using numbers to represent letters (e.g. 4 looks like A) or dropping letters entirely. The plate here is meant to say 'NATURAL BEAUTY', only with the vowels missing.

It's not a funny joke, it sounds more like something you'd find mildly ironic: a woman wears makeup, yet her licence plate says she's a 'natural beauty'. Honestly ten minutes' worth of messing with an eyebrow pencil and lip gloss doesn't seem like much at all - it would be funnier if she had spent hours caking on makeup and claiming to be a natural beauty.

It's like seeing a car with a plate that says SPEED RACER which is being driven normally, like every other car. Not really all that ironic. Now if that car was being driven super-slow and holding everybody up...

I really sucked the fun out of that one huh Smile
