Take plenty of exercise every day, and you will be full of _____.
A. strength B. energy

I think both make sense.
Am I right?

I suppose reading this book will ____ your knowledge about animals.
A. add B. add to

Which one is better? Why?

Thanks

The best answer is B. We normally say someone is full of energy. We just don't normally say someone is full of strength: we say they are strong. It's hard to say it's wrong, but it's odd. Few people would say it that way.

B is not only better, it is right and A is wrong. Nothing gray about this one: A is 100 percent wrong.

There are two slightly different phrases at work here.

1. to add to st: to increase it in some way; to make it larger in number, size, extent, importance, etc.

Ex. "Visiting the museum added to my knowledge of history."

2. to add st to st: to take A and add it to B; to include A in with B and consider them together as one.

Ex. "After Tommy beat Joe at a game of marbles, he added Joe's marbles to his own collection."

Now, consider your example with answer A:

"I suppose reading this book will add your knowledge about animals."

Here's the $64,000 question: Apparently, reading that book is going to add your knowledge about animals...to something. What will it add your knowledge about animals to?

Hope this makes sense.

Greg
