I am reading a passage, and got curious.
The situation is ...
A boy comes back from school, and he finds out that the key is missing.
He can't enter the house, so await his father.
He waits for two hours, but it seems quite long for him because it was freezing outside....
Here,
the passage says...
"Ages later, he finally heard the car of his father"
1) He just waited for two hours. Ages seems to me... a quite long time.
Can I say ages for two hours?
2) Ages later... is this often used phrase?
Thanks.

Two hours?! You could say ages for two minutes...or less! It's all relative. It depends on how long it seems to someone.
For example, suppose a member of your family had taken a flight to a certain city, and later you heard on the TV news that an airplane headed for that same city had crashed. Wild with panic, you frantically get on the phone and call the airline to try to find out what happened and if your family member were on that particular flight. The person you speak with says he doesn't have that information and will have to check with his supervisor. He tells you to hold. So you hold. And you hold...
Don't you think that one or two minutes might seem like an agonizingly long time? Like ages, maybe? You bet it would. If you had to wait on the phone for two minutes to find out if someone in your family were alive or dead, it would seem like eternity. You see what I mean?
Is it common? Sure.
