How I wish I could make a _______ into space and see the stars up close.
A. journey B. voyage
Please tell me the difference of the two words. |
A voyage is generally a long trip in a ship or craft of some type, including a spacecraft. A journey is basically just a trip from one place to another. Some people might consider voyage slightly better here, but both are completely acceptable and either word could be used with no damage to the meaning whatsoever.

When he returned from his success climb of Mount Qomolongma, Andrew finished his travel _______ and gave it to the newspaper.
A. diary B. journal
Which one is better? Why? |
There is some overlap in the meanings of these two words: both can refer to a book in which you record your daily activities. However, in actual usage, we tend to think of a diary as something more personal. We tend to think of it as being more concerned with someone's thoughts and feelings, and thus a bit more subjective. When you say diary, the type of entry that comes to my mind is something like this:
"Dear Diary: Well, I'm Sweet Sixteen today!!!! I saw Tommy at lunch today at school. He is soooooo handsome!!!!!! I wonder if he has a girlfriend?!?!?!?! *giggle* I saw Jane Smith talking to him after Geography class. She was like touching his arm and stuff...God, she is such a b*i*t*c*h!!!!!!"
We tend to think of a journal as being a bit more concerned with recording observations and information, as in the case of someone on a journey of exploration. We tend to think of it as being rather objective. When you say journal, the type of entry that comes to my mind is something like this:
"July 7th: 48th day of the expedition. Left camp at 6am. Spent 2 hrs. chopping our way through heavy underbrush, and finally reached a small village belonging to an unknown tribe. We were met with suspicion, but some small gifts and friendly sign language seemed to win them over. After 4 hrs. we continued toward the south side of Mt. Oogabooga. Should reach the foothills by tomorrow."
Thus, journal would be the preferred word in your example.
Hope this helps.
