After three weeks it got through that the student was taking drugs.
Is it possible to use the phrase ` �t got through` to express:
people found out /people realized....

No, you need to say it got through to somebody. You cannot omit the object with this phrase in this particular usage. For example:
After three weeks it got through to everyone that the student was taking drugs.
