When i called you this morning,nobody answered the phone. Where________?
A. did you go B.have you gone C.were you D. had you been
the correct answer is C.
But I don't know why A does not fit here.
Besides, if I change D into "have you been", will it be ok?

A. does fit, but perhaps C is more usual.

Where have you been is usually asked of somebody when they return.
