Is it possible to replace "that accumulate" in sentence number 1 with "accumulating" in the second sentence?
1. Changing the oil gets rid of very small particles that accumulate over time
2. Changing the oil gets rid of very small particles accumulating over time.

You could. You must however, used the past participle (the ed form) of accumulate in sentence 2. You cant use the gerund (accumulating) because the noun particles experiences or receives whatever the modifier accumulated describes. |
