A number of them are model workers.
A great many of them are model workers.
Both sentences are right, aren't they?
I know a great many can act as a pron. But could "a number of "act as a pron, too? That is, could I say "a number of the students" instead of "a number of students?
Thanks |

Yes.
A number of the students went to the coffee shop after class.
A number of students were late to class due to the heavy traffic. |
