1.Does the quotation above make sense?
2.I think 'before they were now empty and barren' is correct instead of 'before were now empty and barren'. Am I right?

Either ago or before should be eliminated, and a couple of words (in italics below) need to be added for complete clarity. It means:
The plains, mountains, and valleys that were so full of creatures only half a century ago were now empty and barren.
